For as Long as man can remember portals have existed, they appear always in the same place but the timing is random. hours, days or months it could take for them to reappear. These portals connect our world to the world of giants. As time went on and people became smarter we have used technology to reduce the  size of these portals so the giants could no longer pass through. We have yet to find a way to seal them permanently.
